Best Solution after Penguin 2.0: Removing Unnatural Links

July 17, 2013

The SEO industry is a fast evolving one. New changes are coming in the industry and SEO companies have to cope up with the adjustments to sustain in the market. The latest development that has hit the SEO industry is the Penguin 2.0 update. The update came into effect from 22nd May 2013 and since then; things have changed drastically in the SEO field. Innumerable websites have been reported to be affected due to Google’s Penguin 2.0 update. The main problem has been with the backlinks to the websites. Websites that have poor backlinks have been marked by Google and their webmasters are really worried as to what comes next. It is quite sad to see that many websites have been blacklisted due to the same.

Low-quality backlinks are the main culprits behind this problem. If you are a webmaster and your website has not been blacklisted for poor backlinks, you are quite lucky. But, it is still recommended that you should carry out a thorough backlink scan for your website to be safe. Here are some effective ways that can help in dealing with the problem by removing unnatural links to the website:

Request for removing the backlink

This is one of the most common options that are chosen by many webmasters. But sometimes, it is quite difficult to find the exact contact information of the webmaster from whose website the backlink has come. It is important to make a request for removing the backlink in a polite manner by telling the webmaster that your website has suffered because of the poor quality backlink. In case they do not remove the links, give a soft warning that you might be compelled to disavow the links. This has been adopted by many seo companies.

Not doing much with the links and leaving them as it is

Many webmasters are not bothered about the dubious backlinks and leaving them as it is. Google might send them two kinds of warnings. The first kind of warning is not that serious and it will not affect the website or the traffic flow to it in any manner. However, the second kind of warning known as link spam warning is a serious one and it can cause great harm to the ranking and traffic of the website. Depending on the kind of warning received from Google, webmasters can decide their next move for poor link removal.

404 or 410 linked-to pages

This is also a great way of doing away with poor quality links to your site. It is a drastic step taken by many webmasters. It has been confirmed at Google Webmaster Forum that any webpage which has been made 410 or 404, any kinds of links to such pages will not be counted and accepted by Google. However, this might hamper the search engine optimization process for the main website as well.

There are other methods of doing away with poor backlinks as well, which are increasingly being adopted by seo companies. Google has its own tool for the same. Along with these, webmasters are also choosing other means of search engine optimization so that their websites are not affected by the updates that are being brought by Google.
